Esomeprazole is a brand name for esomeprazole magnesium. The brand is a generic version of Nexium. The generic esomeprazole magnesium is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition where stomach acid backs up into the esophagus. You may also see some generic esomeprazole magnesium is sometimes used to treat stomach ulcers, also called esophagitis.
Esomeprazole is used to treat GERD. It is a pain reliever and a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). You should take esomeprazole at the same time every day. You can take esomeprazole for as long as your doctor has prescribed it, even when your stomach is empty. Take it regularly, preferably every 2 to 3 days. If you are taking esomeprazole for a chronic condition called Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, your doctor may recommend a longer course of esomeprazole, even if your symptoms are less severe. The length of treatment may depend on the condition being treated. A doctor may suggest you take a different type of NSAID for the same condition, or you may need a different type of treatment.
You should not take esomeprazole if you have had an allergic reaction to any of its ingredients. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include shortness of breath, wheezing or difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or other parts of the body, or rash, itching, swelling of the mouth or throat or severe dizziness. If you are allergic to any of these ingredients, or are taking any other ingredients of the product, they may not be effective and should be used only as directed.
The symptoms of an allergic reaction may include:
Contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice about what to do.
Esomeprazole is available as a tablet, capsule, or suspension. The suspension may be administered through a nasogastric (NG) tube.
The dosage of esomeprazole in patients who are taking an NSAID is based on the total daily dose. If the patient is being treated for a condition known as COX-2 (including gastroesophageal reflux disease), the daily dose may be increased by the number of doses used in a 24-hour period.
For patients with a history of cardiovascular disease or known hypersensitivity or allergy to any component of this product, the initial dose may be increased by one (1) to three (3) to four (4) to six (6) doses in a 24-hour period. If the patient is not being treated for a condition known as COX-2, the daily dose may be increased by one (1) to four (4) to six (6) doses in a 24-hour period. For patients with a history of GI ulcers or who are taking an NSAID for the same condition, the daily dose may be increased by one (1) to three (3) to four (4) to six (6) doses in a 24-hour period.
Patients who are taking an NSAID for the treatment of heart failure should be monitored closely for worsening of their condition. If any of these symptoms occur, the patient should be asked to stop the treatment.
Esomeprazole is not recommended for use in pregnant or breast-feeding women. Esomeprazole should not be used during breastfeeding.
